The basics
What is sober living in Utah?
Sober living homes — sometimes called recovery homes or transitional housing — are structured, substance-free residences designed for people in the early stages of recovery. They sit between the intensive structure of inpatient treatment and full independence back in the outside world.
In a sober living home, residents follow a daily routine that includes attending support meetings, participating in household responsibilities, and often working or attending school during the day. There’s real structure, real accountability, and real community — without the full clinical intensity of residential treatment.
For most people leaving inpatient rehab, going straight back home — to the same environment, the same triggers, the same people — carries serious relapse risk. Sober living gives you time to build the habits, relationships, and stability that make staying sober possible.
Why Liberty
What makes Liberty’s sober living homes different
Most sober living homes in Utah are standalone properties with limited clinical connection. Liberty’s sober living is different — it’s the next step in a full continuum of care, backed by the same clinical team that supported you through residential treatment.
93% 12-month recovery rate
Clients who complete Liberty’s residential program and transition to our sober living homes maintain sobriety at a 93% rate after 12 months. This isn’t a marketing claim — it’s a tracked outcome.
Scholarships available
Liberty provides sober living scholarships for qualifying clients who complete our residential program or meet PHP entrance requirements. Financial stress in early recovery is a real relapse risk — we work to remove it.
Gender-specific homes
Our sober living homes are gender-specific. Single-gender environments reduce interpersonal complications during early recovery and allow residents to focus on the work that matters.
Clinically connected
Residents can continue attending IOP or PHP at our West Jordan outpatient facility while living in sober housing. Clinical support doesn’t end when residential treatment does.
Employment Pathways built in
Liberty’s Employment Pathways program helps sober living residents find meaningful work — resume building, job placement support, and connections to employers who understand recovery. Building a life, not just staying sober.
40 beds — room when you need it
With 40 sober living beds in American Fork, we have the capacity to place residents quickly. When you finish residential treatment, the last thing you need is a waiting list for housing.

Common question
Sober living vs halfway house — what’s the difference?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there are meaningful differences worth knowing.
Sober living home
- ✓Voluntary residence for people in recovery
- ✓No court-mandated requirement to be there
- ✓Peer-driven community and accountability
- ✓Typically connected to outpatient clinical care
- ✓Residents work, attend meetings, build life skills
Halfway house
- –Often government-funded or court-ordered
- –May house both criminal justice and recovery populations
- –Less focus on clinical connection
- –More restrictive rules, shorter stays
- –Variable quality and oversight
Liberty’s homes are sober living homes — not halfway houses. Residents choose to be there, follow a structured routine, and have access to ongoing clinical and employment support. The goal is independent, thriving recovery — not just temporary housing.

Day-to-day life
What to expect in our sober living homes
Liberty’s sober living program is built on three principles: responsibility, structure, and accountability. Here’s what that looks like day to day:
Mornings
Personal routine, chores, and preparation for the day. Most residents head to work, school, or outpatient programming during morning hours. Structure starts from the moment you wake up.
Daytime
Work, school, or IOP/PHP sessions at our West Jordan facility. Employment Pathways support is available to help residents find and keep meaningful employment while in sober living.
Evenings
AA/NA meetings or aftercare programming, shared meals, and community time with housemates. The peer relationships built in sober living often become the foundation of long-term recovery support.
Accountability
Regular drug testing, curfew, and house rules maintain the integrity of the sober environment. These aren’t punitive measures — they’re the structure that makes the home work for everyone in it.
Community
Shared living spaces, communal meals, and group activities build real friendships. Many Liberty alumni credit the relationships formed in sober living as one of the most valuable parts of their recovery.
Scholarship program
Sober living scholarships — because financial stress shouldn’t derail recovery
Liberty offers sober living scholarships for qualifying clients who complete our residential treatment program or who meet the entrance requirements for our PHP outpatient program. A scholarship provides guaranteed placement in a safe, managed, drug-free home during the critical first months following residential treatment — without financial pressure adding to the weight of early recovery.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about sober living in Utah
How long do people stay in sober living in Utah?
Most residents stay between 3 and 12 months, though there is no fixed requirement. Length of stay depends on individual progress, employment stability, and readiness to transition to independent living. The goal is to stay long enough to build a genuinely stable foundation — not to leave as quickly as possible.
Do I have to complete inpatient treatment to enter Liberty’s sober living?
Not necessarily. Clients who complete Liberty’s residential program are given priority and may qualify for a sober living scholarship. However, individuals who meet the entrance requirements for our PHP program can also be considered for sober living placement. Call (801) 997-9183 to discuss your situation.
Are Liberty’s sober living homes gender-specific?
Yes. Our sober living homes are gender-specific. This environment reduces interpersonal complications during early recovery and allows residents to focus fully on their personal growth and sobriety goals.
What does sober living in Utah cost, and does insurance cover it?
Costs vary depending on the program and length of stay. Liberty offers scholarships for qualifying clients, which can significantly reduce or eliminate cost during the early months. Insurance coverage for sober living varies by provider. Use our Check My Insurance tool or call us to discuss your specific coverage and scholarship eligibility.
Can I work while living in sober housing?
Yes — working is strongly encouraged. Most residents work or attend school during the day and participate in recovery programming in the evenings. Liberty’s Employment Pathways program can help you find work, update your resume, and connect with employers who understand recovery. Building financial independence is part of what sober living is designed to prepare you for.
What’s the difference between sober living and a halfway house?
Sober living homes are voluntary, recovery-focused residences for people who have completed treatment and want structured support while rebuilding their lives. Halfway houses are often government-funded or court-ordered, and may house populations with different needs. Liberty’s homes are sober living homes — peer-driven, clinically connected, and focused entirely on long-term recovery.

In most cases, we can arrange placement within 24 hours for clients transitioning from Liberty’s residential program or for those who meet our program requirements. Call (801) 997-9183 and our intake team will confirm availability and walk you through next steps.
