What Should You Pack for Residential Rehab?
Pack the basics: documents, medications, clothes, and alcohol-free toiletries. Liberty’s inpatient program asks for comfortable clothing for at least a week, hygiene items with no alcohol-based products, prescribed medications in their original containers, and a valid ID. Here’s a fuller checklist:
| Category | What to bring | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | Photo ID, insurance card or Medicaid card, and a list of your doctors and emergency contacts | Intake needs these on day one |
| Medications | Every prescription, in the original labeled container, plus a written list of doses | Tell intake about over-the-counter drugs and supplements too |
| Clothing | Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes for at least a week, pajamas, sneakers, shower shoes, and a sweatshirt or jacket | Utah mornings can be cold, so pack layers |
| Toiletries | Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and a hairbrush, all alcohol-free | Check labels on mouthwash, hair spray, cologne, and hand sanitizer |
| Fitness | Workout clothes and a swimsuit | Liberty clients can use local rec centers |
| Comfort items | A journal and pens, a few photos, and a book | Ask what is allowed before you pack personal items |
One duffel bag or small suitcase is plenty. Your intake team gives you a complete packing list, so ask for it when you call.

What Should You Leave at Home?
Leave anything that could hurt your early recovery or go missing. That means alcohol, drugs, and paraphernalia, along with anything that contains alcohol, like some mouthwash. Leave jewelry, extra cash, and other valuables at home. Many programs also ask for modest clothing without drug or alcohol logos. When in doubt, ask.
What About Phones, Laptops, Tobacco, and Vapes?
The rules differ from program to program, so ask before you pack. Good questions for the intake team:
- Can I have my phone, and when can I use it?
- Can I bring a laptop or tablet for work or school?
- What are the rules on tobacco and vapes?
- Should I bring my own bedding or towels?
If you are not sure what to ask, what to say when you call a rehab center has scripts and a question list.
What Don’t You Need to Pack?
You don’t need to bring food. Liberty’s American Fork facility has a full-service kitchen and serves home-cooked meals three times a day. You also don’t need to bring a plan for everything. You will build one in treatment.
How Do You Get Ready Before Check-In?
A few small steps take the stress out of arrival day:
- Verify insurance. Run the free insurance check or call us.
- Plan the basics at home. Line up care for kids or pets, and cover bills and work.
- Tell one trusted person your plan. You’ll want someone in your corner.
- Pack the night before. Use the checklist above.
- Arrange the ride. It’s best not to drive yourself.
If medical detox comes first, Liberty can usually arrange placement with a partner detox facility within 24 hours when it’s medically necessary. Learn how detox and rehab differ and how long residential drug rehab takes.
